ELON, N.C. – Brendan McKillop
from the top of the key with 1.9 seconds left to tie the score, and Steve
Rossiter
by stealing the inbounds pass and heaving in a triple from the wing as the
buzzer sounded to lift Davidson to a 99-96 double overtime win at Elon
Saturday night.
McKillop finished with a career-high 24 points, and Jake Cohen
career-high 24. JP Kuhlman
eight points in regulation for Davidson to send it into overtime and matched
his career best with 24.
The Wildcats (16-14, 11-7 SoCon) trailed by three in the second extra
session after Chris Long hit a pair of free throws with 14.4 seconds left.
Davidson set up a 3-pointer for Kuhlman, who missed, but Nik Cochran
rebound. The OCats found McKillop deep on the wing, and the junior drained
it with 1.9 seconds left.
Rossiter then made a heady play and stole the inbounds pass at the foul line
extended on the left side of the court. The senior hit 3-pointer as he was
falling out of bounds that beat the buzzer for the win.
After Davidson trailed by as many as four points in the first overtime,
McKillop tied the game on a conventional 3-point play with 1:06 to go. After
Long missed a 3-pointer for Elon (8-22, 5-13 SoCon), Kuhlman missed a
jumper, but Cohen got the board, and Davidson called a timeout with 13
seconds left. McKillop had a decent look at a long triple try as the buzzer
sounded but the shot rimmed out.
Drew Spradlin led the Phoenix with 25 points to go along with eight
rebounds, and Long finished with 16 points, nine assists and six boards.
Adam Constantine recorded 15 points and 12 rebounds, while Devan Carter
scored 12.
Rossiter finished with nine points, and Ben Allison
points and seven rebounds for Davidson.
Davidson had an early 27-11 lead in the game after McKillop drained four
straight 3-pointers. Elon came roaring back with a 28-5 run and took a
seven-point advantage on a Carter jumper with 50 seconds left in the first
half.
The Phoenix took a six-point cushion into halftime and led 70-56 on a
Spradlin 3-pointer with 5:53 left in regulation. Cochran¹s 3-point play
started a 13-3 spurt that brought the OCats to within four points with 2:36
left.
After a Long layup that made the score 75-69 with 43 seconds left, Kuhlman
took over, scoring the last eight points of the period for Davidson,
including two straight 3-pointers that made the score 77-77 with six seconds
left. Long missed a contested triple as the horn sounded to send the game to
overtime.
The Wildcats play their first game of the SoCon Tournament at 2 p.m. Friday
in Bojangles Arena in Charlotte.
Game Notes: McKillop had a career-high seven 3-pointersS It was the largest
second-half deficit the Cats have come back from this season. It was
Davidson’s third overtime game this season, and the Cats are 2-1. It was
the second double overtime game this season and the Cats are 1-1 in those
games.
