Local Martial Artist wins longest running Martial Arts tournament

Posted by Lake Norman Sports On March - 31 - 2010

Master R.T. Berry, of the R.T. Berry School in Mooresville ended up with a Grand Championship in Grand Master S.H. Kang’s 37th U.S. Open Championships on February 27, 2010.  Grand Master Kang’s tournament is one of the longest running traditional martial arts tournaments in the country.

In order to earn Grand Champion each of the divisional winners from their respective weight class must compete to get down to one Grand Champion.

Berry finished first place in the light weight men’s fighting division and went on to defeat the heavy weight champion.

“What makes this so special is to have met my student and training partner for the tournament in the finals.  He won the middle weight and I won the light weight.  At the end of the day, there were only two men left, and it was me and Mr. Best.  That is what we call a School victory.”

Berry went on to add that his School also finished 1st and 2nd in the ladies fighting divisions.

“We go as a School.  Win or lose, we do it as a School and always have. Most important to me has always been how we act.  Win or lose, at the end of the day what type of people we are is what counts at our School.  I was very proud to be a part of the day, and to represent my students and my school at that level.” Berry said.

The R.T. Berry School has become known in the Lake Norman area as a program to build Character through Martial Arts.  If you would like more information about the R.T. Berry School’s programs for all ages 2 and up, you can reach the School at 704-658-0544 or on the web at www.rtberry.com.
